Enough Blogging
I know it's been a while once again!! I'm so sorry!
My old laptop was slowly losing the will to live, and unfortunately I had to endure the most annoying process to get my new one. But finally I am back, and with very exciting news!!
Before the end of the month I will have finished university and to celebrate the big finish, we are holding an end of year degree show!
We will be theming the entire night on the idea of New Arrivals (in to the industry), complete with airport interior design.
We have worked hard this week to create the invitations and get them sent out.
Below you can see a snippet of our handiwork.
If you fancy having a look at the talent ready to enter the design and advertising industries and live anywhere near Gloucester or Cheltenham, then please feel free to pop by!
It's all a bit daunting, but also very exciting!
I can't wait!!
I saw the new Mars advert for the first time yesterday (coincidentally, the same day Fabrice Muamba was released from hospital).
For those of you who haven't seen the ad, it begins with a football goalie being taken off the pitch on a stretcher, before the cameras turn to a number of his teammates looking sick with worry.
The ad goes on to show a linesman taking the goalie's place and performing remarkably well.
The idea behind the ad is not particularly special, nor would it be memorable if it weren't for the timing of it's release.
Personally, I find the way in which Mars have played about Muamba's illness disgusting.
I am not a massive fan of footie, and I had not heard of Muamba before the day he collapsed on the pitch.
But I, along with thousands of others felt distraught that the life of such a healthy young man was clearly a worry for a number of weeks.
For Mars to release this advert just a matter of weeks later I feel is in appalling taste.
I think it is a miracle that he has made such a brilliant and speedy recovery, but despite this fact, his collapse should not be considered some form of promotional tool.
Poor taste and judgement on the part of Mars and their marketing team I think.
Finally, I'm wishing him a continued recovery. Clearly he's a very strong man.
Images not my own.
Today I landed back in Chelts town, and I had a horrible moment when I realised that this is my last term at university.
I'm feeling pretty down that I won't be able to seesome of my best friends and course mates every day.
But I have decided that university must go out in style, so I'm setting up my own little Cheltenham TO DO list, and it starts tonight...
1. Eat at the 'nice Chinese' in town
2. Have a proper night at Vodka Revs
3. Order numerous take-outs
4. Attend every club night in one week
5. Have a proper Sunday roast with all the friends
6. Sing at open mic night at the SU
TO BE CONTINUED...
I'm a little bit in love with the new collection from Nike and Liberty.
Their collaboration last year was beautiful as well, combining the sporty style with elegant, feminine floral designs.
I absolutely love that they have a wedge pair too! Perfect for a shortie like me! :)
Unfortunately these amazing shoes come with a £90.00 price tag which is massively out of my price range.
At the moment I have my fingers crossed that next year's collection is as equally beautiful and hopefully by then I'll be earning enough cash to get myself a pretty pair!
First things first, the pictures above are not my own.
Unfortunately I don't have nearly enough cash to own one of these beauties, but I needed decent pictures to explain exactly what I'm working on at the moment.
I'm currently working on improving my portfolio, and as I'm hoping to enter the advertising industry once I graduate, I've decided that my portfolio needs to be more advertising orientated.
I have decided to attempt re-creating some big campaigns, starting with the Dior Grand Bal VIII ad (made famous by Scarlett Joahnson).
It's all very new at the moment, so I'm still in the sketching stage.
But I am also working on some other briefs, as well as trying to improve my photography skills.
Hoping it will all finally fit in to place this week.
Time seems to be flying by at the moment!
Don't quite know how I'm going to get it all done.
Last week we handed in our Degree Show concepts to be judged by both our peers and course leaders.
After working solidly on it for quite a few weeks, Lindsey and I were pleased with what we'd produced, and we were determined to present it as well as we could to give it something extra special.
Unfortunately, the picture above doesn't quite do the presentation justice because it was impossible to get a good shot in such a small room.
However, I have included images of the flyers and the personal invitations above. If you want to see more of the work, feel free to look at my website www.cargocollective.com/emmadubreydesign
Now it's the Easter holidays, but despite it being gloriously sunny outside, I'm stuck inside working on the next modules.
It's seeming a bit never-ending at the moment, but I'm excited and nervous for what's ahead!
I've been back home in London this weekend, soaking up some of the St Patrick's Day spirit and charm.
I've also used the opportunity to get some of my old projects out of the archives and photograph them for my website.
With a little help from my dad who has some photography expertise, and the sun which stayed out just long enough to get the right lighting, we managed to get some pretty decent shots.
I learnt a bit about my new Fujifilm bridge camera as well as realising that it would have been impossible to get such good shots at uni because my room is so poorly lit.
Thank goodness for home!
The next step on my road to success is creating a beautiful and effective piece of direct mail, as well as considering how best to present my portfolio to the different agencies. I didn't want to create a magazine or book because I've produced so many and it can become a bit repetitive.
Above are a selection of the doodles I worked on while I was considering the best form of portfolio presentation, but I think i've decided that a really beautifully produced book may well be the best way to present my portfolio.
If I go down the book route then I have to do all I can to make it stand out, but in the end all I want from it is to be professional with a definite Emma flair. I'm hoping the 'Emma flair' will give me the edge over other potential candidates. Fingers crossed!
Unfortunately I have also realised in the last week how unimpressed I am with some of my earlier design work. So as a side protect, I have decided to try reproducing some of my old briefs.
I've discovered that what would have taken me weeks in the first year can now be done in a matter of hours, if that.
Thank God with the amount I'm taking on at the moment!
It's time to invest in some decent paper and spend a good few hours staring at InDesign to make sure I get it right.
Our new and very final module has been set, and it is focused around self-promotion. In a last-ditch attempt to prepare us for the big wide world, we are producing creative identities, direct-mail strategies, communication strategy documents, websites and more....
The website is on it's way, but I shall provide a link once I'm completely happy with it.
Until then the above is just a possible creative identity concept which will provide the header for my website and any creative documents.
I hope it's not a little too professional because a logo to represent me would probably be quite weird and wonderful.
But I think I'll remain professional until I have everything else in place.
Time is flying past, and it's all getting a bit scary! Already preparing for the big old world of advertising, and I can't bloody wait!
Today is my 21st birthday, and after a lovely weekend with my family at home, I returned to my university house today to find it had been turned in to a birthday fun house by my friends!!
Unfortunately the pictures don't quite reflect just how good it was because of shoddy lighting, but my door had been covered from top to bottom in birthday banners and balloons!! (see below) And by my door sat the first of many little presents being guarded by our beloved house pepper man!
After ducking under the conga line of banners to enter my room, I then went in search of the other salt and pepper present guards, which were to be found in the freezer, the bathroom, and under crockery!
Just shows what happens when you live in an arty-farty house with a load of arty-farty students! It's amazing, and I loved it!
Now though unfortunately, it's time to get on with being 21 and just waiting for the next big celebration....graduation! Ahhhh, doesn't time fly when you're having fun!
